The Power of Mirroring Your Audience: What Every Speaker Should Keep In Mind

The Power of Mirroring Your Audience: What Every Speaker Should Keep In Mind

January 24th, 2017 by Alicia Green

Anyone who has taken a college Communications 101 course understands the basics of delivering a presentation. That said, most of us understand that you need to adjust every presentation to suit your audience. That may seem obvious, but sometimes it’s easier said than done. Here are a few tips that can help:

Use your power of influence. If you’ve managed to gather a captive audience, you’ve already won half the battle. Before you fire up that projector or even introduce yourself, remember that your audience already considers you a subject matter expert. Let this serve as the ammunition to fuel your confidence.

Do your research. You’ve taken the time to prepare a pristine keynote presentation. You’ve probably invested a handful of hours rehearsing your talking points and soliciting feedback from your colleagues, friends, and possibly your pet. Now it’s time to complete your preparation by vetting your audience. Understand what they are curious to know. Here are a couple of suggestions:

  1. Send a confirmation email with a three question survey to gauge their familiarity with the subject.
  2. Make the presentation interactive.
  3. Be aware of social cues that may take place during your presentation.

Tell a story that they can relate to. It’s very easy to lose spectators in technical jargon. Do your audience a favor and stir in some humor! But be sure to keep it relevant and brief. In fact, there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting personal. Connect with people by telling them stories about what you’ve learned or mistakes you’ve made. It’s a great way to encourage them to ask questions more confidently.

Giving an impeccable presentation is rare. Giving an entertaining and informative presentation, on the other hand, is within reach if you take the time to prepare, research, and relate to your audience.
